During this year’s TAM, I had the distinct pleasure of accompanying Steve Novella and Michael Shermer to debate an antivaccinationist at FreedomFest, a conservative/libertarian confab that was going on in Las Vegas at the same time as TAM. That antivaccinationist turned out to be Dr. Julian Whitaker, a man who champions Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski and is one of Suzanne Somer’s doctors. There’s no polite way to put this, Steve Novella wiped the floor with Dr. Whitaker, mercilessly pummeling him with facts, analysis, and logic to the point where even the audience appeared to be grumbling. And now for something completely different.
Except that it isn’t really. I say that it isn’t really different because, although this post will seem to be about politics, in reality it will be about a common topic on this blog: Anti-science. And where is this anti-science? Sadly, it’s in the platform of a major party of one of the largest states in the country. It also meshes with the anti-science inherent in a lot of so-called “complementary and alternative medicine” (CAM) and all comes together in one place: The proposed 2012 Platform of the Republican Party of Texas. It’s all there, as you will see. Read more
If there’s one thing shared in common among nearly all advocates of pseudoscience, it is the belief that they know The Truth. More importantly, they know The Truth, and The Powers That Be don’t want you to know The Truth and will do almost anything to makes sure that The Truth stays secret. Think about it. This sort of thinking is common, be it among advocates of alternative medicine, cold fusion advocates, HIV/AIDS denialists, 9/11 “Truthers,” birthers, creationists, moon hoax believers, or Holocaust deniers. I'm sometimes asked why I do this. Why, people ask me, do I spend so much time generating post after post after post day after day after day? Obviously, one reason is that it interests me. Another reason is the passion that drives me to support science and science-based medicine and to detest the damage the pseudoscience, particularly pseudoscience in medicine, can do. There is, however, at least one more reason.
I'm referring, of course, to the adoration of my "fans." Read more
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7 King James Version
Ever since World War 2, America has been a nation on the defense. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was much like our more recent 9/11 which caused a great deal of grieving in America but also a sense of fear because we know now just how easy it is for another country to take advantage of a weakness in our security and harm us badly. It also threatens our way of life which is very important to all of us. Read more

Lord Acton said power tends to corrupt. I couldn’t agree more.
In a previous post, I wrote about how the government reflects the people it governs. Despite low public trust and congressional approval, throughout the years the citizenry has demanded more and more from the federal government. Read more
When the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act passed Congress and signed into law by President Obama, you would think the mandate for all Americans to buy health insurance or pay a penalty, was something that came from the deep bowels of Liberalism. In fact it was originally a conservative idea and has been until Obama and a Democrat-controlled congress took it up. Read more

The candidates who are still in the race to win the Republican nomination are an interesting bunch. It might be interesting to wonder who the most likely would be to: Read more
After the midterm 2010 election when Republicans gained control of several state houses and governor seats, they began working on legislation; not to create jobs for the unemployed as many of their campaigns promised, but to introduce new abortion restriction laws and contraception laws, pass legislation to limit the power of unions, passed legislation to take bargaining rights away from public workers, and to restrict voting rights of poor people by passing Voter ID laws and putting more restrictions on voter registration and early voting, and legislation to give more tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. It seems we’ve often met like this before.
We looked at each other in the same way then.
But I can’t remember where or when
Well; here we are again.
The reason I can’t remember where or when is that there have been so many times when we as a people have had to face the same shame and the same sense of loss.
We have been forced by our humanity and our conscience to internalize the pain and the heartache that comes with the senseless slaughter of women and children.
Force ourselves to feel the deep dark sense of loss that the parents of these dead children must feel. Read more
I was going to write about Rick Santorum.
But what can I say that anyone with two braincells to rub together hasn’t already said or thought?
This is a guy who believes that Freedom of Religion, means his Freedom to force his Religion on everyone in America.

The last time I posted; I left off by saying that though I believed in a Grassroots Movement; I found that when I examined the roots; another problem reared it’s ugly head.
Here is the ugly head…………………………
…………………………………………Even among people who are on the side of reform; the Liberal side; there is so much disagreement.
And although we normally think of Maniacal Dictators coming from the Right; the Liberal side unfortunately has there own set of people whose main goal is the gaining of power to push forth their own fanatical ideology under the guise of agreeing with our fight for freedom.
These people are the ones who keep the pot boiling. Read more
Maybe I was just confused.
Then; over time; I began to realise that far from being confused; I had a very good hold on what I thought and think about the various pieces of insanity that surround us; but…………………………………..
……………………………………….I did find; over the years that most of the folks who made the most noise about politics and were supposed to be the smart ones who knew the direction we should take and how to get to where we want to be turned out to be Very confused.
Either they don’t know what the American people want or they don’t care; I thought.
Then it came to me.
Politicians don’t run Governments. Read more
