The Republican National Convention is meeting this week to, I suppose, confirm their support for the Republican candidate for president, and set their agenda.
Let me point out that the Republican agenda is usually the same, except this time it has moved even further to the right, especially when it comes to abortion. We Democrats look forward to Republicans making abortion an important subject for the 2012 Election season.
However, let us take a walk down fantasy lane with the RNC platform and see where it takes us:
“We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or fund organizations which perform or advocate it and will not fund or subsidize heath care which includes abortion coverage.”
The RNC has always been against abortion but not with a platform as strict as this one. In a Republican world where there is no abortion, all those extra children born into this world will grow up to lead happy productive lives, in Republican fantasyland that is.
Then do not let us forget that Republicans do not like welfare so those reluctant mothers who would have had an abortion but could not, will need to get to work, that is, once they can find a day care that is affordable enough for someone working minimum wage. By the way, minimum wage will not be going up either, as Republicans do not like the idea of a minimum wage in the first place.
They also probably will not be funding any day care assistance either as with Republicans, there is always a need for another tax cut for millionaires and billionaires, so no frivolous stuff like day care for working moms having all those extra children, thanks to the end of abortion.
Say Bye to Affirmative Action
“We support efforts to help low-income individuals get a fair chance based on their potential and individual merit; but we reject preferences, quotas, and set-asides, as the best or sole methods through which fairness can be achieved, whether in government, education or corporate boardrooms…Merit, ability, aptitude, and results should be the factors that determine advancement in our society.”
In Republican fantasyland, there is no need to worry minorities; there is no longer any prejudice in America and all universities and corporations will only look at your abilities and aptitude, not your skin color.
If you don’t believe there is no more prejudice in America, just look how well Republicans have taken up with the nation’s first black president. Just gives you a nice warm, fuzzy feeling, doesn’t it?
No Representation for Undocumented Workers
“We support changing the way that the decennial census is conducted, so that citizens are distinguished from lawfully present aliens and illegal aliens. In order to preserve the principle of one-person, one-vote, the apportionment of representatives among the states should be according to the number of citizens.”
This means, I assume; let’s only count actual citizens for our census because that’s the only ones who matter. This also sounds like more pretend paranoia that somehow illegal aliens are going to steal our vote and thereby steal our elections– thus Voter ID laws.
Do not worry, in Republican fantasyland there will not be any illegal aliens. There may not be any aliens at all, except those that Republicans deem worthy to step upon our blessed shores.
Gays Will Not Marry
“We reaffirm our support for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.”
I would suppose they would also annul any gay marriages that have already taken place. In Republican fantasyland, there are no gay people; everyone is heterosexual because homosexuality would be banned. Back into the closet my fellow LGBT friends. I am sure they will also want to reinstate “Don’t ask, Don’t tell.” Might as well, while they are on a roll.
No New Taxes
“We call for a Constitutional amendment requiring a super-majority for any tax increase with exceptions for only war and national emergencies, and imposing a cap limiting spending to historical average percentage of GDP so that future Congresses cannot balance the budget by raising taxes.”
We should never forget that in Republican fantasyland, roads and bridges repair themselves or some nice corporation goes out there and fixes them. Schools and other public buildings should never need repair because that would cost tax dollars and any new taxes to fix them would hurt the “Job Creators” and you never hurt the “Job Creators” with more taxes in Republican fantasyland.
Christian Religious Freedom Exclusively
“We support the public display of the Ten Commandments as a reflection of our history and our country’s Judeo-Christian heritage, and we affirm the right of students to engage in prayer at public school events in public schools and to have equal access to public schools and other public facilities to accommodate religious freedoms in the public square.”
Muslims and other religions need not apply. In Republican fantasyland, Christianity is the only religion. Let the kids pray in school but do not dare build a mosque in my neighborhood.
Nationwide “Stand Your Ground” Law
“We support the fundamental right to self-defense wherever a law-abiding citizen has a legal right to be, and we support federal legislation that would expand the exercise of that right by allowing those with state-issued carry permits to carry firearms in any state that issues such permits to its own residents.”
Republican fantasyland is a remake of the Old West. They dream of the day they can go anywhere and tote their guns. This is primarily a man thing but let us not forget Sarah Palin, so there are definitely some exceptions.
It would also allow certain gun-toting conservatives, namely those who are bigots, to rid the world of who they consider inferior to them. It would surely be their fantasyland if they could finally, legally kill and then just declare self-defense.
End of Lifesaving Medical Research
“We oppose federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.”
This is a product of their pro-life agenda. They have declared that life begins at conception and no one else’s opinion matters. There is great potential in embryonic stem cell research as far as curing a number of diseases. All that can be blocked from happening, thanks to a Republican agenda that cannot see the forest because of all the trees.
In my opinion, the Republican National Conventions platform is a continuation of policies that have already failed this nation but Republicans are determined they will force our nation to step backward, not forward.
The pace of recovery may be slow now, but at least it is going forward under an Obama presidency. Perhaps it would move substantially quicker if we did not have a Republican agenda, controlling half of our Congress with a mindset on blocking a second term of our president. Maybe this next election we could fix that by sending some of those Republicans home.
