Katie Halper's Top 10 Reasons the US Isn't Getting its Panties in a Bunch Over Honduras

July 9, 2009 by Living Liberally

Crossposted from livingliberally.org
Let's face it. The news media isn't covering it. The US Government has barely mumbled a coherent word about it. But why is the US so unsure of how to react to the ousting of democratically-elected Honduran President Zelaya, his unplanned pajama trip to Costa Rica and the Honduran military's subsequent, violent clashes with protestors?

Laughing Liberally comedian Katie Halper posted a Top 10 to explain why the US has kept the Honduran coup and our shameful history of instigation in the region in the political freezer, as American concern for Latin American politics wrongfully continues to teeter on the edge of oblivion.    Read more

Correcting Subtle Racism Requires Keen Eye, Creative Solutions

July 1, 2009 by Living Liberally

Last Month Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor caught the brunt of conservative criticism for certain comments made regarding race and how it factors into a judge’s decision-making. Sotomayor said, “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."    Read more

Laughing Liberally comedian Lee Camp's "Moment of Clarity" videos are funny-but-true assessments of current trends in media and politics that never cease to make you think. This week's piece, "The U.S. Killing Protesters in Iran," is the perfect example. You can watch it here.    Read more

Do No HAARM

"What are they thinking?"

I find myself asking that all too often when conservative commentators tell us why we can't / shouldn't / won't -- whether it's over healthcare reform, energy reform, economic reform...you know any old reform. Their arguments are almost unbelievable...and yet, there they are, talk show after talk show, repeating the same talking points.

Then I ask a second question: "How do they all say the SAME absurd things?"    Read more

The Best Fundraiser Pettiness Can Buy

Who knew that Al Franken wasn't the Minnesota Senate candidate who'd get the biggest laughs?

Before Al was the perpetual-nearly-seated-Senator, he was most famous for Saturday Night Live and "Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot." So we expected his campaign would be, well, funny.

Turns out Al ran a serious, focused campaign that upset an incumbent and will have placed him in the US Senate, once the shenanigans pass.

Not so funny.    Read more

Thinking Liberally with Justin Krebs

The right-wing must be feeling like a slow-footed boxer, facing off against someone with the speed, grace and rhetoric of Muhammed Ali. As our President keeps skipping around the ring, always a step ahead of them, their swings just keep missing...occasionally just pounding themselves.

This is what happens when you have a Multi-Tasker-in-Chief.

One day, in pursuit of Souter's suitable successor, the White House signals it may select someone that'll turn Red-Staters red in the face.    Read more

Eating Liberally Food for Thought by Kerry Trueman

I grew up in Woodland Hills, Calif., a nominally pastoral, petrocentric Los Angeles suburb, so peak oil prognosticator James Howard Kunstler's dim view of our car-crazed culture really resonates with me.    Read more

Laughing Liberally to Keep from Crying
by Lee Camp

Laughing Liberally's Lee Camp decided not just to make light of the economic situation, but to look for a few solutions.

Tackling a lousy economy, reel real estate market, and growing homelessness all at once...he's multi-tasking better than the previous administration every could.    Read more

Changing the Channel

April 27, 2009 by Living Liberally

We're familiar with the repeated metaphors pundits use to describe America. The tide is turning," "the tables have turned, "America is turning a new page." It's enough turning to make one dizzy.

As a kindle-phobic book-hugger, I love "turning pages" as much as anyone...but I am going to offer another metaphor: America is changing the channel.

No, we shouldn't replace book imagery with TV imagery...but this metaphor is more than rhetoric -- more and more Americans are changing our country by changing one particular channel...and tuning out Fox "News."    Read more
